One thing I really struggle with on a day to day basis is getting and staying motivated at my work. Don't get me wrong, I love my job and the people I work with. The work isn't really to blame here, it's all me.
Maintaining enthusiasm about things is something I can really struggle with sometimes and I often find myself already dreading work on my morning commute. Again, not because I hate my job, but because the prospect of spending 8 hours sitting at my desk is daunting. Because of this I've tried to implement some fun aspects into my day to help relieve any stress or boredom I may encounter.

1 - Start your day healthy and happy
I find that in the mornings if I have a carb-loaded breakfast (looking at you hash browns) I quickly become sluggish and irritable before it's even hit my morning tea break. Instead I like to make sure I start my day healthy usually with some granola and fruit before leaving the house. I also try to make sure I have a piece of fruit or a snack bar in my handbag in case any hunger pangs get me during my commute or in case I'm running late.
2 - Keep Hydrated!

As soon as I get in to my work one of the first things I do is fill up my water bottle. I try to drink three bottles of water a day while I'm at my work (1.5 litres). Your body and complexion aren't the only things that are going to benefit from this, keeping hydrated will benefit your brain too. Studies have proven that water deprivation can make us tired and sluggish at work and affect our concentration, alertness and memory. Hydrated brains are therefore happy, healthy brains which help us get through our work faster! Just make sure you add some time for extra toilet breaks!
3 - Be Sociable!

I think it's extremely important to create a happy, social atmosphere at your work. Not only will it help you actually enjoy being at work but could also lead to you expanding your circle of friends. This can be a particularly hard thing to do if you're new to a job or if like me you're the youngest person in the department. Take tea breaks together, go for walks during lunch together but more importantly get to the pub after work together and you'll have a work social circle in no time! Remember boundaries are important though, these are work friends you will have to see every day! For more salacious conversation start a group email with your BFF's. (hint: code names for
that one colleague are particularly helpful, just saying!)
4 - Get Physical

If you work in an office based environment like me you will know the importance of not sitting chained to your desk all day. It's important for your body's well-being that you take frequent breaks from sitting at your computer. If you're keeping hydrated then this shouldn't be a problem with all the pee breaks you'll be taking! Another thing I like to do every few hours is take out the time to stretch out my back, shoulders and legs, usually somewhere private to avoid looking strange, your body will thank you in the long run.

5 - Protect your eyes!
Sitting staring at a screen can also affect your eye sight and concentration and can often be a cause of
migraines. The 20/20/20 rule is an infamous way to prevent eye strain and headaches and simply involves looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. I find doing this every so often helps me collect my thoughts about what I'm working on and can break the monotony if I'm doing some repetitive work.
6 - Tune In and Switch Off

Speaking of repetitive work, some of my work requires me to do quite monotonous tasks such as data entry. While these are fairly simple tasks I always find my attention lagging after a while and to get past this I listen to audio books. Thankfully I work somewhere that I'm allow to do this! Listening to audio books is a good way to keep my mind from wandering too far from my task at hand and helps me get through my work faster. Just remember to double check your work for any mistakes you might have made!
Audible is a great audio book service to use and has a handy app for your smartphone. They often do free trials or discounted prices so keep an eye out for that.
I hope you find these tips helpful for getting and staying motivated at
your workplace.
